Applications Open: We Rise Black Business Accelerator Program

Applications are now being accepted for Local First Arizona’s inaugural Black Business Accelerator Program. Local First Arizona’s Small Business Development Manager, Carmen Attikossie  who will lead the program says  “A culturally responsive and collaborative entrepreneurial environment has proven to help build resiliency among communities who have far too often been left behind. We are ready to hit the ground running and be a resource the Black business community can count on to scale up and get started,”.

The program is being modeled after a similar program, Fuerza Local Business Accelerator, which is a program for latinx small businesses also created by Local First Arizona. Over 500 businesses have completed the program with over 600 jobs created from the small businesses.

Facebook Continues Black Business Support with Buy Black Friday Initiative

In an effort to show their commitment to uplifting Black-owned businesses, Facebook has launched “Buy Black Friday”. Buy Black Friday serves as a gift guide for customers to be able to support black owned businesses by shopping with them for the upcoming holiday season. “We really want to be able to help these businesses coming into the holiday season,” says Erica Woods, a spokesperson for Facebook, “because we know it is such a critical time right now.”

Woods goes on to say, “Over the next month leading up into Black Friday on the 27th,” Woods adds, “we will have live shows on our platform to help support small Black-owned businesses across the country…The gift guide is in partnership with the U.S. Black Chamber of Commerce,” Woods explains, “We selected over 60 different businesses. Those businesses are completely diverse in what they’re offering- that’s fashion, food, clothes. I mean, you name it, there’s something represented there.”

Businesses that will be participating have already been selected.

Kansas City Group Helping to Build Up Black-Owned Businesses In Poverty Stricken Area

Many black entrepreneurs are well aware that walking into a bank an receiving funding for their venture is not possible. This leaves the only option to fund their endeavors on their own. To help with this, a group of people in Kansas City looking to help create Black wealth is changing the narrative. Generating Income for Tomorrow, GIFT, was created out of necessity and is offering grants, networking connections, and other financial resources to small black businesses in the area.

So far two grants in the amount of $10,000 have been awarded. The most recent recipient being LaRonda LaNear, owner of We Got It Covered Catering.

“We know we are not going to be the complete savior of everyone,” says Brandon Calloway, the executive director of GIFT, “But she was in a critical point where this $10,000 grant could propel her.” Calloway went on to say, “We are identifying businesses that are already there to help them grow for the residents that are already there. By doing that, we have the potential to increase property values in the urban core, increase income and spur upward economic mobility for an area that has been historically redlined and is made to be an intentional economic dessert.”

Calloway, who grew up in an area of Kansas City that has a poverty rate of 36% understands the disparities faced by residents in these areas compared to areas that are 92% white, which only have a poverty rate of around 5%.

GIFT hopes this year to be able to reach a goal of raising $250,000 to go towards small, black-owned businesses.
